With Great Power Comes Great IRresponsibility?

I was alerted to this incident through a social network just this afternoon.

18-year old Bambee dela Paz blogged about a terrible incident that happened between her family and a group of politicians at, of all places, a golf course!

My goodness, you’d think a golf course was a safe enough place (aside from the risk of getting hit by a stray golf ball, of course!) But to be mugged right there? Your 56-year old dad and 14-year old brother??????

We still have to get both sides of the story as we still have to hear from the politician/s involved. The news is pretty fresh and so far, has already been featured by ABS-CBN and GMA News. But I am reacting as a mother (I have a 14-year old son and daughters Bambee’s age). What would you do if you saw 2 of your loved ones being attacked in a golf course by politicos and their bodyguards?

Over the next few days, we will see how this story pans out. But for now, as an ordinary citizen, wife and mother, I am truly appalled!!! Being a blogger, Bambee’s plight was immediately taken up by the blogosphere and as I am writing this now, her story is already being reposted over and over again in various blogs and social networks. But it gets me thinking — what about those who have no connections? No blogs? No friends who can advance their causes? For sure if this can happen to a decent family like the dela Paz family, there are thousands more for whom justice remains elusive.

I am always for LIFE and when a family, obviously in a golf course to share a common bond (and probably there to continue celebrating the Christmas spirit) get this physical attack on loved ones, I have to say something. This is NOT RIGHT. And I am truly appalled at the brazenness of it all.

As citizens who have the right to be protected by the politicians we elected into office, we need answers — FAST! How can we expect our children and us to feel secure when we hear about incidents like this? I truly hope this issue can be resolved with justice given to the aggrieved parties.

Bambee closes her blog with this prayer: “Please pray for my dad, my brother and for my whole family. Please pray that we get JUSTICE. Oh God, please, give these people what they deserve.” Yes, Bambee, we will be praying for you and your entire family. Keep the faith!

To keep you all in the loop, I am including links below to related blogs and media articles. I will update this list as I come across more.

This incident is truly appalling regardless who started it. It all boils down to egos but the stature of those involved makes every Filipino’s blood boil as, I reckon, we all had enough of politicians acting as if they own everybody.

For sure if this can happen to a decent family like the dela Paz family, there are thousands more for whom justice remains elusive. —- Who knows? Maybe there have already been other victims of Pangandaman who can’t even complain because they’re just unfortunate. I guess their only hope is that the De la Paz family would win the case. With this, they would be justified.

in this incident, the dela Pazes were first given attention by the media and add that to the fact the natural tendency of many filipinos (including me) to hold prejudice against moros, my first reaction is anger at the pangandaman.

and i am still angry at them up to this moment. secretary and mayor pangandaman should have known better and should have acted with prudence no matter and however they were provoked. they are no ordinary citizens but persons vested with responsibility by the people.

however, i now tend to give credence to the story of the pangandamans after my friend who happens to be a member of valley golf related his brush with the dela Pazes. and so the story goes this way:

shortly before christmas, he was practicing his putting in one of the three putting greens in vally golf. in the other putting green is bambee de la Paz also practicing putting. mind you, this family of dela pazes are terrific golf players! all of a sudden, bambee, together with her mother fanning herself like crazy, joined my friend in his putting green, stroking the house balls here and there, oblivious to the presence of my friend. golf etiquette 101: this is not beig courteous. the same issue they used against the pangandamans. fortunately my friend is no pangandaman and so the scandal happend days later and not involved my friend. after around 30 minutes of pure arrogance and “i am a champion and who are you” attitude from bambee, she and her mother left my friend in the practice green with the 12 house balls strewn all around. etiquette 101 again: this is, again, not being couteous. the ball holders clearly bore the sign “replace after use.”

after i heard this story of my friend, he and i thought, well, the arrogant dela Pazes met their match in the equally arrogant pangandamans.

now, we are angry at all of them for bringing their lies to the public and wasting our time!

arrogant or not, they still don’t deserve to get beat up by 6 men. an elderly man and a minor being ganged up by 6 men, some of whom are armed? there are other ways to call attention on their arrogance. this is indeed an irresponsible act by people who should be for the people. and this is not a waste of time. if the pangandamans were indeed just “defending themselves” they should’ve stopped when their opponent was down. this is just so wrong in so many levels.

As I have said before, I cannot fathom what kind of violation or behavior could warrant shooting/hurting someone regardless of who started it.

The family was interviewed this morning but I ended up reacting more to the questions posed by the host than to the story. S-questions were asked such as, tingin mo ba magbibigay ng tamang statement yung mga taga Valley Golf? (leading; besides, the question indicated the host’s biases already…what’s the rule in journalism again?) Gusto mo bang mag apila sa NBI? (Why make an appeal? It’s their job to find and establish the truth and not to favor anyone.) Will you find forgiveness in your heart? (unnecessary, immaterial at this stage….very much like the usual question posed to someone’s bereaved family and friends “anong nararamdaman mo?”).

now, the official security incident report is now out! find it at http://midfield.wordpress.com/2009/01/02/valley-golf-guards-report-pangandaman-security-men-drew-guns-on-dela-pazes/

and guess what: take a look at lines 5, 6, and 7 and let me quote (with all the typo errors):

“but based to the statement of VGCCI marshall/ starter (mr elmer saguisa) at that time he talk already both parties but sudenly he was not expected that argument was not settled.”

aray! now, where did this detail first appear in the blogsphere?

answer: from the post of brianna asal above, posted on the 29th of december or 3 days after the incident and i cut and paste:

paragraph 3, lines 7 and 8: With the said explanation, del Paz replied “Okey, kortesiya lang.”

paragraph 6, lines 5 to 7: “Nasser Jr. reiterated to the marshall what he explained to the elder dela Paz, which his knowledge the former already accepted his explanation.”

paragraph 8, lines 3 and 4: ” “Akala ko po, Sir, nagkaintindihan na ho tayo kanina”.

another answer: from the post of p that only appeared yesterday, or 1 week after the incident: and i cut and paste again:

paragraph 6, line 14 and 15: Thinking that things had been cleared up, Mr. dela Paz said, “Okay, kortesiya lang” (”Okay, just seeking courtesy“) .

paragraph 8, line 8 to 12: During their break, the marshal approached Nasser Jr, stating that the dela Paz’s were complaining that there were five of them in their group and why they overtook the dela Paz flight. Nasser Jr. reiterated to the marshal what he had already explained to the elder del Paz, to which his knowledge the former had already accepted his explanation.

aray again. now why are these very telling details not in bambee’s blog? it is now clear as daylight that before the fisticuffs started, even the mashalls thought that the overtaking issue was already settled! ask mashall mr elmer saguisa!

    aray! aray! aray!

I think both sides have had a lot to say on this matter. The comments above air sentiments that are personal to the commenters and I respect all your views.

My post here was a mother’s reaction after seeing a bloodied 14-year old who is the age of one of my kids. Any mother worth her salt will always come to the rescue of her son or daughter who is hurt by anything or anyone.

But as this is my personal blog and as I meant it to be a blog about life, its joys and pains, I wish to keep it a personal one and leave the rest to the fact-finding bodies to ferret out what really happened on that day.

For this reason, this post will now be closed off to further comments. I wish to wait for the official word after a thorough investigation is made. And I hope that the findings and eventual resolution will be accurate, just and fair to all parties concerned.

Happy New Year and may this coming year look kindly on all of us.
